Dr. Williams stopped by to talk to us about bone marrow transplants and how Spectrum Health offers the only Blood and Marrow Transplant Program for adult patients located in West Michigan.
A bone marrow transplant (BMT), also called a stem cell transplant (SCT), can be used to treat patients with certain cancers or other diseases. Most often, these include:
- Leukemia
- Lymphoma
- Multiple myeloma
- Myelodysplastic syndrome
- Other non-cancerous blood disorders, such as anemia, metabolic syndrome and immune deficiencies
The transplant procedure involves taking cells that are found in the bone marrow (stem cells), filtering those cells, and giving them back either to the donor (patient) or to another person. The goal of transplantation is to transfuse healthy bone marrow cells into a person after their own unhealthy bone marrow is treated to kill the abnormal cancer cells.
