KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — The accused teenager who was the subject of a police chase Saturday night that ended with him fatally crashing into another driver has been charged.

According to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor, David Michael Mills, 17, is being charged with two offenses: first degree fleeing and eluding and driving while license was suspended, revoked, or denied, causing death. Both offenses carry maximum 15 year sentences.

Portage police say that they spotted Mills fleeing from a Kalamazoo Public Safety officer Saturday night. He allegedly sped through a parking lot before heading west on Kilgore Road from Westnedge Avenue.

Mills then continued to flee west before turning south onto Oakland Drive. That’s when – police say – Mills crashed into another vehicle backing out of a driveway in Oakland’s 7900 block.

The driver pulling out the driveway, 33-year-old Crystal Norton from Paw Paw, died at the scene.

Mills and his 16-year-old passenger were not hurt. The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital but later released.

Mills is expected to be back in court sometime next week.
