GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Penguins at John Ball Zoo got their annual physicals Tuesday.

To prepare for the exams, the pool is drained and the penguins are corralled as they wait their turn.

All 32 penguins, ages 7 months to 31 years old, were examined one by one by a veterinarian.

During the exam, zoo officials pay attention to what the birds are eating, which is why they bring out metal detectors.

Three vet students, zookeepers and other zoo staff also helped with the exam process.
