Community installs memorial bench in honor of murder victim

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Friends and family gathered at the corner of Lafayette and State street in Grand Rapids on Wednesday afternoon to unveil a new bench. It's to honor Lance Byers, a man who was shot and killed during a road rage incident in February 2012.

Byers was heading to work at his job at the Kent County Department of Human Resources when he was involved in a minor car accident.

Inside the other car was a man and woman. Byers and the man got into an argument and that's when the woman shot and killed him.

Co-workers admired the bench as it was unveiled, saying how much they missed and loved Byers. They also say they're glad there's something more permanent there to keep his memory alive.

Lance's face is displayed in the center of the bench in bright green and white.  The colors were chosen because Byers was a graduate of Michigan State University.

The bench installation was also a part of the revamping process for the bus stop right on that corner.
