DETROIT, Mich. — Muskegon native and former Grand Rapids Griffin Justin Abdelkader has signed a seven-year extension with the Detroit Red Wings, the team announced Thursday morning. TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that the deal is worth $29.75 million.
The 28-year-old Abdelkader is coming off his best year as a pro in 2014-2015 — tallying 44 points (23 G, 21 A) for the Red Wings.
He opened this season with a hat trick against Toronto, but has just one goal and three assists in the last 14 games.
Abdelkader scored 76 points (35 G, 41 A) in 110 career games with the Griffins following a stellar college career at Michigan State.
