ALLENDALE, Mich. – A Grand Valley student senator introduced a resolution to the school’s Student Senate General Assembly Thursday to create a “Good Samaritan Policy” to allow “legally carried firearms on campus to be used in case of an emergency.”

Student Senator Benjamin Soltis created the resolution.  According to a release from Soltis, Grand Valley’s student code prohibits anyone on campus from carrying a firearm except law enforcement.  Michigan law does allow for Concealed Pistol License holders to carry on college campuses with certain restrictions.  Soltis also says that the school allows for armored trucks with armed, non-law enforcement guards to be on campus.

The resolution would waived student code penalties against someone who uses a firearm on campus “per Michigan law in an emergency situation for the protection of self or others.”

The resolution will be discussed for two weeks before any voting or motions can be made on the measure.
