DETROIT, Mich. – A fairly common phone scam is now targeting a younger demographic: college students.

The FBI is alerting Michigan college students to watch out for a phone scam where the FBI phone number shows up on the recipient’s caller ID.   The caller tells the student of delinquent student loans, or taxes, or overdue parking tickets.  The caller sometimes threatens the student with arrest or not being able to graduate if the fees are not immediately paid via MoneyGram. The FBI says that the callers claim to have specific information about the student.

The FBI says they have received multiple calls from college students at various schools around the state.

Everyone, not just students, is reminded that the FBI does not call private citizens demanding money and you should never give out unsolicited requests for personal information to callers you don’t know.

Anyone receiving a call should file a complaint through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.IC3.gov.
