GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A long and successful run in the restaurant business is coming to an end. After 45 years of serving customers along Wealthy Street, the Wealthy Street Station is closing its doors.
A sign on the door informed costumers of the news, and it's proving to be heartbreaking for many who have enjoyed great times and good food there.
Carol Welniak, owns Wealthy Street Station and Carol's Catering, was still hard at work whipping up potato salad for events she had scheduled. After 11 years, she and her husband, Bob, are closing up shop.
She can't believe it.
The deli is filled with memories, including original gas station memorabilia on the walls. A photo album is filled with her fondest of memories.
"When we first opened it. that was a great day," Carol said. "We had friends and family and everybody here, and everybody was wishing us success, and we did have success."
Carol, with her grandson Alex by her side, said it's been an emotional day for her. She and her husband relish the memories of their everyday costumers and local celebrities, like Al Green.
It's time to close the doors, she said, as her husband's health is a priority.
Carol said she will continue her catering company in a different location. And her husband will enjoy family time, a little golf, and restoring old cars.
