GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Two teenage girls were pulled from Lake Michigan at Grand Haven State Park Thursday afternoon, according to Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.
The water rescue was reported at about 3:17 p.m. Grand Haven Police say a local surfer pulled the girls from the water.
One of the victims, a 13-year-old, was not breathing when pulled from the water and was taken to the hospital in serious condition. She is now in stable condition, according to police.
The other girl, a 14-year-old, was taken to the hospital for observation and has since been released.
Police say the girls were likely caught in a rip current since they were 800 feet out from the pier.
The National Weather Serviceissued a beach hazards statement earlier this week, saying that swimming conditions along the Lake Michigan shoreline would be dangerous due to high waves and strong currents.
The NWS said beaches would be particularly dangerous Thursday, with waves as big as five to nine feet.
