PLAINWELL, Mich. -- State Representative Cindy Gamrat announced Friday that she has no plans to resign from office.
Despite her intentions, Plainwell community members, including the mayor, are asking for her to step down from office.
Plainwell Mayor Rick Brooks said that Gamrat is making a "mockery" of her role in government.
"She needs to go away. She needs to resign because not just necessarily for her, but for the community," said Mayor Brooks.
Mayor Brooks also said that Gamrat is pulling the City of Plainwell through the mud, in light of her admitted affair with fellow state rep. Todd Courser.
"I don't like it. When your on national TV. When they are making fun of you on the late night shows, it's definitely time to go. She's just making a mockery of her position, I think," said Mayor Brooks.
Several community members echoed Mayor Brook's stance.
"Cindy made a mistake and she impacted her family and his family and that in doing so, that she should resign," said 15-year resident Dennis Phalen.
During Gamrat's first public appearance since her sex scandal with Courser broke, she offered an apology to her constituents, but stated she has no plans to resign from office.
Michigan Tea Party leaders issued statements on Friday, also calling for both state legislators to step down from office. Tea Party leaders even threatened to take further action if they don't by saying, "If resignations are not forthcoming, the best option is a special election so 'we the people' will have a voice."
"The cover up is just idiotic with what they are trying to come up with, what he's trying to come up with. But, the fact that she did have an affair. I'm sorry, you lost the public trust. You have to resign," said Mayor Brooks.
However, there are some people in Plainwell who said that they respect how far Gamrat has gotten in government. They also said that it's too early to jump to conclusions.
"We need all those facts to make a decision and at this point, she's come forward. She's apologized and from my understanding they are doing an investigation, so until that comes around and that's completed, people need to hold judgment," said 20-year resident Lee Anne Thor.
State House officials are conducting an investigation into the incident, in order to determine if anything illegal was done here.
The aide to both Courser and Gamrat who is accused of blackmailing the two, will speak to reporters on Monday. Check back with FOX 17 for updates.
