MATTAWAN, Mich. – A tragic car accident brought Mattawan High School students together today to mourn the death of a classmate.
John Porn, 18, died Thursday afternoon at the corner of KL Avenue and Almena Drive and two other students were injured. According to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff, Porn was driving when he ran a stop sign and was broadsided by a woman driving a Hummer. Nichole Tully and Mia Holmgren, both 16, were in the car with Porn and were critically injured. The woman in the Hummer suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Friday, Mattawan schools superintendent Robin Buchler said she heard the sirens yesterday and feared the crash might have involved her students. Counselors were available today for students.
Buchler tells us that Tully has a head injury and Holmgren broke both legs severely. Both had undergone surgery.
