GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Each week FOX 17 News features a child who is living in the Michigan foster care system. As we continue our Forever Home series, we want to remind families that adoption through the state of Michigan is free.
This week we would like to introduce you Gavyn. Like many children we feature, Gavyn lives in a group placement as he goes to school and hopes to be adopted.
Gavyn may be one of the sweetest 12-year-olds you’ll meet. He is artistic and loves to paint and make origami.
“I painted a lot of stuff, like wood, and bricks,” said Gavyn.
Out of all the pottery at Naked Plates that he could choose from to paint and take home, Gavyn quickly picked up a yarn bowl to make as a gift.
“For my grandma, because she likes to knit,” said Gavyn.
A sweet-natured and polite seventh grader, Gavyn said he values his grandmother’s visits every other Sunday at his group home. Even though he is happy and doing well in all classes at school, Gavyn said he still hopes to be adopted.
“Just a family, that’s all I need,” said Gavyn.
Gavyn said all he really wants is to have fun with a family; to him that means spending time together outdoors or camping, even riding roller-coasters.
One of his favorite hikes was when he went on a “quest” with a group, he hiked 15 miles in one week, and then cooked their own food.
“We were cooking on like a little gas container,” said Gavyn . “You know how there’s like tiny ones? There’s a little attachment that hooks up then you light it.”
Adventurous and driven, Gavyn stayed concentrated on painting his grandmother’s gift while he spoke with FOX 17, and said his design is “supposed to be flowers.”
Gavyn said he doesn’t need much else except for a family.
“Not really anything, just the right family,” said Gavyn.
The first step to adopt Gavyn, or any other child through, is to call the adoption agency, Orchards Children’s Services at 1 (855) 694-7301.
FOX 17 News would like to extend a special thanks to Celebration Cinema and Naked Plates for this fun filming session!
