Ex-substitute teacher takes plea deal in criminal sexual conduct case

Jon Ira Dalton

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. —A former substitute teacher at Kent City Elementary School pleaded no contest Monday to second-degree criminal sexual conduct, according to the office of Kent County Circuit Court Judge Mark Trusock.

Jon Ira Dalton, 68, of Newaygo, was accused of inappropriately touching four young girls.   A staff member notified a community liaison last October after claiming to have witnessed Dalton inappropriately touching a student.

As part of the plea, three other second-degree criminal sexual conduct charges were dropped.

Dalton faces up to 15 years in prison, according to Judge Trusock’s office.   He will be sentenced Aug. 20 at 1:30 p.m.

Kent County Assistant Prosecutor Travis Earley said in March that the plea deal was offered to keep the victims from having to testify in court.
