Battle Creek standoff: Shot fired, children inside home, but it all ends peacefully

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — An argument between neighbors in Battle Creek escalated to where a shot was fired, there was a standoff between the suspect and police with children inside the home, and finally the suspect gave himself up with no one getting hurt. The incident took place in a home in the 400 block of E. Emmett Street.

The series of events began around midnight Wednesday when, according to witnesses talking to police, two neighbors argued. One of them left and returned with a gun, which he fired into the air.

By the time police arrived, the suspect was inside with four children and refused to come out.

Negotiators got the suspect to come to the window, but he continued to refused to give up and, according to police, became more irrational.

Police managed to get inside the house, and the suspect surrendered.

The children were turned over to family members, and the suspect is now in jail. There had been a previous warrant for his arrest.
