HARING TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A bear protecting her cubs seriously injured, and may have killed, a family dog.
The incident happened in Wexford County, just north of Big Rapids.
Wexford County deputies say they were called at about 11:30pm on report of a bear attack. When deputies arrived, they saw the bear in the driveway of the home.
They used their lights and sirens to try and scare the bear off, but it only ran up a nearby tree. Deputies were able to get to the homeowner and wounded dog in the backyard. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment of severe injuries and puncture wounds. Social media comments indicate the dog has since died.
After the deputies moved back from the scene, the bear and three cubs came down the tree and went off into a wooded area. The homeowner told deputies that he had suspected a bear had been in his yard before, but he did not see the bear then. He let his dog out and the bear charged at the man and the dog, while the cubs scampered up the tree.
