Grand Rapids woman’s husband in Nepal during massive quake

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — As the world watches the devastation in Nepal, a local woman is waiting to be reunited with her husband who was in Nepal during the quakes.

Jennifer Whitten-Sunar said that her husband Ishwor, a native of Nepal, had just arrived when the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck and knocked out communication with him for several hours.

“Four (earthquakes) happened one after another, and that’s when we lost complete transmission,” Jennifer said.

Jennifer met Ishwor in Grand Rapids. The couple married in 2013. Holding their six-month-old daughter in her arms, she said she is holding onto hope for the country.

“He says that is nothing like he’s ever seen before. His first words were the world is ending.”

He has described large sink holes in the ground the size of cars, Jennifer said.

Ishwor is with family whose home is high in the mountains and didn’t suffer any damage, Jennifer said.

“He is with his mother, his younger brother, his brother’s wife, because they live in family homes there. They all stay together,” she said.

Not knowing the next time she will be able to hear her husband’s voice again, Jennifer is watching a long side the rest of the world.

“All people can do is pray and help build stronger structures,” Jennifer said. “That’s all that my husband said: ‘We are so weak here.’ They are so weak.”

Nepal is not out of the clear just yet, as significant after shocks continue to rattle that region.
