GRPD to propose $1.2 million gunfire detection system

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Police plan to propose implementing a new system designed to more effectively respond to gun crimes at the City Commission meeting on Tuesday.

Police Chief David Rahinsky tells Fox 17 that they have been exploring the technology behind the system for over a year.  After recently receiving the support of the S.A.F.E. Task Force, they are moving forward with requesting funding.  They will be requesting about 1.2 million dollars to implement the system.

The money would come out of Grand Rapid’s “Transformation Fund”.

GRPD is hoping to have the system operational by summer of 2015.
