LANSING, Mich. -- After a 13-year old Stoni Blair and 8-year-old Stephen Berry were found dead last month in a freezer, Michigan lawmakers are now pushing for change to closely monitor households that homeschool here in our state.
Mitchell Blair, 35, now charged with murder, claimed she was homeschooling her children, an alibi that camouflaged the whereabouts of her children for more than a year.
New legislation proposed Friday by State Rep. Stephanie Chang, D-Detroit, and Detroit City Councilwoman Mary Sheffield, would require home schooled children to be registered within their school district. The bill would also require scheduled visitations by a list of city officials, physicians, or licensed social workers.
Lawmakers for the bill say they're trying to reach and protect those children at risk of abuse or serious harm.
Blair is in jail on murder charges for the deaths of her children.
If the bill is passed, it would be named in memory of Stephen and Stoni.
