FLUSHING, Mich. — Potholes are about to get a whole lot sweeter – that is, after you take the first bite of a new ice cream.
It’s a treat that has more to do with our bumpy roads than you may think.
“All of the profits they make from the Michigan Pothole, they are going to donate 1 percent back to the state of Michigan to fix the potholes,” said Joanie Fagen, owner of Roaring 20s Ice Cream Parlor.
Roaring 20’s opened for the season last Saturday, and the special flavor has been a big hit.
“I’ve had numerous Facebook people questioning me, and I’ve had phone calls,” Fagen said.
The ice cream was created by Ashby’s, a Sterling, Michigan company.
“It’s a chocolate base, with a thick tar that goes through and then the little chocolate chunks are pieces of asphalt. You take a fudge nut waffle cone and put michigan pothole in it – it’s a winner,” Fagen said.
It’s being distributed nationally to Ashby’s retailers, and according to the company, at the end of the season, Ashbys will donate a portion of the sales to MDOT. It’s all to prove their commitment to helping Michigan fix its roads.
Now, one percent of a $4 ice cream cone is not a lot. Is it a valid fix to the massive problem? No, but it is intended to put a positive spin on the not so positive issue.
“They’re taking it and they’re running with it. I got an email flyer that’s got the repair trucks out on the road with the potholes and stuff. It’s a great concept, we needed something different, we have it,” Fagen said.
You can get a taste of it at Roaring 20’s ice cream parlor through the end of the season.
