HOLLAND, Mich. - A young swimmer preparing to dive in a state tournament goes under water during competition and doesn’t come up.
Teams from all across the state were competing inside the Holland Community Aquatic Center this afternoon.
The center's executive director says a swimmer from the east side of state was doing a practice dive and never came back up. Life guards and other coaches dove in to the pool and pulled him out. They administered CPR helping to save the young man's life.
We've learned that one coach who helped out is Kurt Mirandette, a diving coach for Northview high school. Officials say Mirandette was one of the first responders and administered CPR.
The school's athletic director says he experienced chest pains after helping the young diver and was taken to the hospital. He was in surgery and is doing better.
Overall, quick action by the life guard and all the coaches helped saved the diver's life.
