Sheriff’s Office sergeant focus of drunk driving investigation

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A Kent County Sheriff’s Office sergeant is under investigation for suspected drunk driving in a January crash where he was seriously injured.

The crash happened at 3 a.m. Jan. 4.

Sgt. Peter Gerkin, 44, was injured and taken to the hospital shortly after. The sheriff’s office sergeant has been part of law enforcement since 1997.

Gerkin was the lone occupant of the one vehicle involved in the collision.

The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified about the investigation and is awaiting blood tests before submitting the investigation for review.

Information on this case, including the blood test results, could take weeks.
