PORTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Cass County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a drowning that happened Monday night.

According to the Cass County Sheriff, it happened on Shaveshead Lake at around 11 p.m. Monday night. Deputies say that Larry Malsch, 71, from Cassopolis was with his friend, 56-year-old Christopher Habic, also from Cassopolis, when they were sinking Christmas trees in the lake. They were placing the trees in the water to help enhance the fishing in the area.

Habic said Malsch was in a boat out on the water, while he was on shore. The boat then capsized, and Malsch fell in the water. Habic said he swam to his friend and pulled him to shore. Malsch was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.  Habic did not require any treatment.

The incident is still under investigation.
