Grand Rapids neighborhood on edge after masked intruders break in, shoot man

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A man was shot at about 9 p.m. Tuesday after answering the door to his home.  male was shot after answering the door to his own home.

“He said ‘hey I got shot’, and at first I didn’t believe him until I saw the blood stain,” said Andy Kosiorek, a neighbor who called 911.

Now the  neighborhood near the 1400 block of Quarry Avenue is on high alert. Kosiorek says he found male when pulling into his driveway. The male collapsed shortly after talking to Kosiorek in the street. Kosiorek says he stayed with the victim until the police got there.

“I asked him what happened and he said ‘I don't know. I came to the door and somebody shot me,’” said Kosiorek.

Police say the victim answered a knock at the front door. When he opened it, he saw masked men, one with a gun. Immediately, he shut the door, and said he was calling the police. That’s when the intruders ran around the house, and broke in through the back door.

“It was his left side, abdomen, all blood,” said Kosiorek.

Kosiorek lives down the street from the victim, and he said the man eventually collapsed right in front of his home.

“I have never seen anybody being shot there. I have seen some incidents, but nothing to this extent,” he said.

Police say they are conducting interviews, and the victim is in stable condition.

“You hear about guys in ski-masks kicking in a door in a house, and it just doesn’t make sense that definitely comes to your mind right away,” said Merrill about whether the crime was drug related.

Police say the victim doesn’t know the intruders. Two people were brought in for questioning Tuesday night, but have since been released. Until the attackers are found, people in the neighborhood are thinking twice about their safety.

“It’s scary. People being shot in this neighborhood, I have been living here on and off most of my life and it's concerning,” said Kosiorek.
