GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- An adult lingerie and novelty store is moving in next to Grandville High School, and some parents in the community are asking how that kind of business can be placed so close to where their children learn.
‘Nice and Naughty’ is set to open in the next few months on Wilson Avenue adjacent to the entrance of the high school. It's a location many parents we spoke with find inappropriate for a store of sexual nature.
“I’m not very excited about it," parent Amy Hibschman said. "I think it gives a really poor message to the high school students, female and male.”
Nice and Naughty is a self-described upscale lingerie and bachelorette store. CEO Amer Hakim says there won’t be any inappropriate window displays, and no one under age 18 will be allowed inside.
“Doesn't matter, it's poor placement. Kids are going to find a way,” parent Lisa Mize said.
FOX 17 spoke with Grandville City Manager Ken Krombeen, who tell us because the store sells less than 40 percent of sexually oriented items, it`s not federally regulated and is simply considered a retail store. Items such as lingerie, lotions, or fragrances aren`t considered sexually oriented items.
On the heels of viral pictures on social media that allegedly showed a Grandville student performing a sex act, parents say the timing couldn't be worse.
“Awful, awful," Mize said. "And they couldn't have known obviously what's been going on, but still not the place for a store like that.”
The business license was approved months ago, and Nice and Naughty is set to open by the end of the year.
FOX 17 spoke with Grandville Schools superintendent, who says he did know about the store and has no comment on its placement.
