METRO DETROIT, Mich. — A pedestrian bridge has collapsed over the Southfield Freeway, shutting the road down and causing major traffic issues in Detroit early Friday morning.
According to FOX 2 News, Traffic is backed up for miles with many motorists stuck near the site of the collapse. One of their reporters, Roop Raj, tweeted photos and reported Detroit Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford was among those drivers stranded on the freeway.
Early reports indicate the bridge may have collapsed after it was struck by a semi truck. In a live interview with Michigan State Police, FOX 2 News learned that the driver of the semi truck was injured, and later died at the hospital. Nobody was on the bridge at the time.
The incident happened early enough in the morning commute to where the impact on traffic was not as severe as it could have been.
