Friends save man who was swept off pier by large wave

Posted

HOLLAND, Mich. — A man who was walking with some friends on the north pier in Holland was swept into the channel by a large wave.  Fortunately, his friends knew exactly how to react.

After the 19-year-old man fell into the water Sunday evening, his friends tossed one of the available life rings to him, and brought him to safety.  He was already back on shore by the time emergency responders had arrived.

The victim was treated at the scene and did not require a visit to the hospital.

Officials are using this situation as a reminder to be careful on the pier when high winds produce large waves.  The walking surface can become more slippery than it seems.
