BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A 25-year-old man is facing open murder charges after the death of a 7-week-old child.
Manuel Hernandez was initially charged with child abuse after a June 25 incident at a Douglas Street home.
However, Isabella Smith was taken off life support Thursday and died at a Kalamazoo hospital and officials are now seeking murder charges. Investigators say Smith suffered a severe head injury in the incident.
Hernandez was caring for Isabella while her mother was working.
