PLAINWELL, Mich. – A couple in their early eighties who live at the Life Care Center Nursing Home in Plainwell just celebrated twenty years of marriage July 14.
Betty MacDonald smiled and told Fox 17 “I’m lucky I found him.”
Twenty years ago July 14, Neil MacDonald met Betty. In a month they were engaged, and less than one year later they wed. Now sitting side-by-side, Betty still looks at Neil and giggles, as if they had just met.
“The best decision I ever made in my life was to marry Betty,” said Neil. “I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
From the day they met, the pair said they shared many similarities, and each of them became built-in support.
“We have a lot of things in common,” explained Neil. “First of all, we both have cerebral palsy, we’re a year apart in age, we’re both only children, and neither one of us was ever married before. That’s a coincidence you don’t often find, probably one time in a lifetime.”
Neil said one of the keys to their long and happy marriage is always considering your spouse first. Now twenty years later, Neil said they don’t always see eye-to-eye, but it’s clear they’ve found their forever.
“Things turned out very well,” said Neil. Betty giggled and shouted in agreement.
July is a month full of celebrations for the inspiring couple: Betty will turn 83 on July 18, then Neil will be 84 on July 25.
Happy anniversary and happy early birthday to Betty and Neil.
