WYOMING, Mich. (March 4, 2014) — Paczki Day could be referred to as the Black Friday for many West Michigan bakeries. At Marge’s Donut Den in Wyoming, they’re on target to make 19,000 paczki by the end of the day, Tuesday.
It’s not uncommon to see lines out the door during Paczki Day at Marge’s. But the place runs like a well-oiled machine: keeping pre-orders strategically stacked around the dining room, everyone assigned to their specific job, and providing special bags that allow customers to carry up to five boxes at once.
Some Americans celebrate Fat Tuesday with the Polish pastry the Tuesday before Lent. Historically, the purpose was to use up all the lard, sugar, eggs and fruit in the house because Catholics were forbidden to eat those types of food during their fasting practices of Lent.
