EAST LANSING, Mich. — With MSU taking the title of 2014 Rose Bowl Champions, Spartan fans are trying to get their hands on the official gear.
After sitting in the stands for MSU’s 1988 Rose Bowl win, Robert Hudson returned to Spartan County with his wife and four kids to relive history.
“I was better looking back then, but no it still is great, both are great wins. It’s great to be a Spartan today,” said Hudson.
Hudson said that even though it’s been 26 years, the feeling of celebration in the air feels the same as it did decades ago.
“When I was here in 1988, now they can kind of see what it was like in a sense. Of course it’s nice to be in Pasadena this time of year, but they got to see what it’s like just to be Spartan and watch them win a rose bowl. I mean that’s a big event. It’s been 26 years since we won the last one,” said Hudson.
Luckily for Hudson, a company in Detroit starting printing the shirts and hats on Wednesday night, just moments after the Spartans took home the historic win. Owners of the MSU Student Bookstore raced to pick up the merchandise and had it on the shelves before noon.
“All of the history here, all of the memories here. It’s just a great place. I love coming back here all the time. It’s a great place to go to school, I’m trying to get some of our kids to come up here to go to school, trying to bring them up here to get experience here to see what it’s like,” said Hudson.
“You got to be a part of history right? So we went over to the statue, got our pictures taken with the statue and the frozen roses and everything, and yes we are just happy to be here today,” said Robert Hudson’s wife Marsha.
Hudson said that after waiting since 1988, it’s never too early to get his hands on the championship apparel.
In Grand Rapids, places like Meijer and Legends Sports and Games inside the Woodland Mall are expecting Spartan Rose Bowl championship merchandise on Friday.
MC Sports in Grand Rapids said that it sold out and won’t be receiving any more.
You can find Spartan championship gear at Dunham’s Sports in Grand Rapids and Dick’s Sporting Goods in Portage.
