GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Herb Elfring, 91 of Jackson was stationed near Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Elfring said that when he first heard the planes, he assumed it was a training drill. That was until he noticed the Japanese symbol on the side of one of the planes.

Elfring said that bullets came within feet of him as he ran for cover, and the whole attack took about two hours.

Alongside other troops, Elfring helped people wounded in the attack.

Elfring also said that in recent years he believes people are putting more of an emphasis on the Pearl Harbor anniversary as many of the original survivors are dying.
