CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. — A wrecker driver is recovering after he was hit by a car while helping another driver that went into the ditch.

The accident happened Tuesday night on I-94 near the Helmer Road exit.  Police say a man with Tigers Wrecker Service had been trying to remove a vehicle from the ditch, and was standing next to his wrecker when he was hit by a car.  He suffered serious injuries to his leg, but is expected to survive.

The driver who struck him is a 21-year-old woman who was coming back to Michigan from Chicago for the holidays.  Police say she lost control of her car on the icy roads.  She and her passenger were not injured.

Police are urging drivers to use this as a reminder to leave plenty of distance between you and other drivers, as well as to slow down when the conditions call for it.
