HOLLAND, Mich. — A member of the Holland Latin Kings was sentenced in Tuesday to 3 1/2 years in prison for smashing a Snapple bottle on a rival gang member’s face.

Uvaldo Ruiz, 21, was sentenced in U.S. District Court three years to the day after the incident occurred.  He previously pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering activity.

According to court documents, he assaulted Gangster Disciples member Jeremy Weatherspoon with the Snapple bottle during an altercation between members of the two gangs.  The 2010 assault broke Weatherspoon’s nose and gave him an eye injury.  Ruiz was 18 at the time.

Ruiz’s attorney Kenneth Tableman asked for a sentence of two years or less, saying the prison would put him back “in an enbrionment of criminals after he has already pulled himself out.”
