ROCKFORD, Mich. — Monday morning, Elizabeth Walters said she took a frantic phone call from a young man claiming to be her grandson.
“He said, ‘I’m in a little trouble, but you have to promise me that you’re not going to tell anybody else about this,'” Walters said.
The grandson said he had gotten in trouble in Peru and was behind bars. Another man convinced her to wire $18,000 to bail him out and take care of court costs. An employee at the Walters’ bank told her it’s a scam and saved her from making the costly mistake.
