KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Kalamazoo City Commission selected a new city manager during a meeting Monday night.

Jim Ritsema, currently the assistant city manager in Battle Creek, was a unanimous choice by a 7-0 vote of commission members.

Mayor Bobby Hopewell and the commission members are now entering into negotiations on a contract for Ritsema. The commission is scheduled to vote on the contract on Oct. 21.

Ritsema was one of four finalists for the position. He will succeed current city manager Ken Collard, who plans to retire by Dec. 31.
