MARINE CITY, Mich. — A SCUBA diver is in police custody, after allegedly trying to smuggle marijuana from Canada into the United States by swimming it under a busy shipping lane.
According to The Daily Mail, border agents apprehended the suspect early Tuesday morning when he surfaced in Marine City, Michigan. That’s on the American side of the St. Clair River. He was caught with eight pounds of marijuana in a waterproof canister. The street value of the drugs is estimated to be at around $40,000.
Investigators say he was swimming underneath the busy shipping lane to avoid detection. They became aware of his attempt after receiving a tip that someone was swimming across the river.
