LANSING, Mich. — The number of highway deaths and injuries involving impairment through alcohol or drugs, jumped in 2012, but the five-year trend shows more than 11 percent fewer impaired driving deaths.
Each year, Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Center, in cooperation with the Michigan Department of State, issues a Drunk Driving Audit. The latest audit breaks out statistics year-by-year on alcohol or drug related traffic deaths.
In 2012, there were 342 deaths involving impaired driving, up from 319 in 2011. But over the last five years, the number of such deaths has dropped 9.8 percent.
