Consumers Energy Warns Customers Of Scammers

Posted

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Consumers Energy is warning Michigan residents about imposter phone calls asking customers for utility payments.

Reports of the scam have come from Consumers Energy customers mainly in southwest Michigan. Most who have reported an incident, say the caller claims utility service will be disconnected unless a credit card payment is made over the phone.

Customers effected by the scam are asked to call Consumers Energy at 1-800-477-5050.

Most of the intended victims have not paid the imposter, and Consumers Energy wants to remind customers not to give money or personal information over the phone to anyone they do not know.

Tips on avoiding utility fraud are available on the Michigan Public Service Commission’s web site: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mpsc/mpsc-ca_utilityservicefraud_211946_7.pdf.
