SAUGATUCK, Mich. — If you can’t make it to Kentucky this year for the annual Derby there is an event going on right here in Our West Michigan this weekend that brings the Derby to Saugatuck. The First Annual Derby Day in Downtown Saugatuck is Saturday May 4th. Businesses will be opening their doors in celebration of this years race. There are many events around town including:
Live music from the Jackson French Quarter Dixieland Band starts at 2pm.
The Derby Hat Contest, where hats are judged on many categories including largest hat, most creative, most glamorous and funniest. Entries begin after 1pm and the contest begins at 3pm at Wicks Park Pavilion.
Mint Juleps will be available around town and one-dollar from each julep will go to Project Ponytail a non-profit organization that helps abused women and children through equine therapy.
The Shop and Sample will feature samples of food from 1pm to 3pm so you can shop around town and sample dishes from Saugatuck-Douglas’ best restaurants.
And restaurants like Zing Eat/Drink just across the bridge in Douglas will have dinner and drinks prior to the Derby at 5pm with a viewing party starting at 6pm.
