Prescribed Burn To Take Place At The Macatawa Marsh

PhragmitesHOLLAND, Mich. — The Holland Department of Public Safety would like to advise motorists and residents in the Holland area, that a prescribed burn will be taking place tomorrow, April 24, 2013 in the Macatawa Marsh. The marsh is located in the area of the Black River that is bordered by River Avenue on the west, Lakewood Boulevard on the north US-31 to the east and 6th Street on the south.

The burn will be conducted by Plant Wise of Ann Arbor and will begin at approximately 1:00 PM Wednesday and continue for roughly 5-6 hours. The burn is weather dependent and is may be cancelled with limited notice.

Smoke will be visible from a significant distance. It is requested that motorists avoid stopping and observing on the roads noted this will create a hazard to themselves and others. A suitable observation area will be the Window on the Waterfront Park located at 6th & College in Holland for anyone wishing to view the burn in progress.

This prescribed burn is being utilized to manage Phragmites, which is an invasive plant that has become part of the Macatawa Marsh. Prescribed burning furthermore helps to promote a habitat for native plants and wildlife and can also serve as a fire prevention measure.
