STANTON, Mich. — A mother and her boyfriend were arrested Tuesday and charged with child abuse involving injuries to the woman’s 2-year-old daughter.
Samantha Slater and Benjamin Wilkins, both 26 and both of Greenville, were arrested after Slater and Brent Slater appeared for a pretrial conference in Montcalm County Juvenile Court to decide whether their parental rights should be terminated.
Samantha Slater and Wilkins were charged with first-degree and second-degree child abuse in the case of Brooklyn Weimer.
First-degree child abuse carries a maximum sentence of life in prison while second-degree child abuse has a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Brooklyn Weimer was rushed to the hospital on March 24 after first responders found her suffering from severe injuries at a home on West Grove Street in Greenville. She remains hospitalized at DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids after suffering life-threatening abdominal injuries, intracranial bleeding, severe brain swelling and lacerations on her liver.
