Rescue Crews Respond to Kayaker in Trouble near Riverside Park

Posted

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich – First responders were able to rescue a kayaker who’s watercraft flipped, forcing him to grab on to a tree until help arrived in Grand Rapids Sunday evening.

Grand Rapids Firefighters dispatched a rescue boat and jet skis near Riverside Park around 7:15 p.m.

A Fire Captain at the scene tells FOX17 the kayak flipped and the person didn’t have a life jacked on, forcing them to hold on to a nearby tree until first responders could get there.  There was a life jacket on the kayak, but it floated away before it could be of any use.

The kayaker was pulled from the water and transported to the hospital for observation, but is expected to be ok.

There’s currently a no contact advisory in place for the Grand River in both Kent and Ottawa Counties.  Authorities are advising people to stay out of the water for the time being due to the flooding that’s happening along the Grand River.
