KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A man accused of trying to steal copper wire from a church was hurt after falling off the roof.

Police received a call from someone who was out walking his dogs, reporting that a man was trying to break into the Abundant Faith Word Church on Bank Street in Kalamazoo.  The caller said the suspect was on the roof, trying to enter through one of the vents.

Officers surrounded the church and climbed onto the roof with a ladder.  They say the suspect had actually been stealing copper wire from the HVAC systems.  They continued searching the roof of the building, and found the suspect lying in a small courtyard about 15 feet below the building.  He had fallen and injured himself.

Police had to force entry through a locked door in order to get to the courtyard and make contact with the suspect.  He’s described as a 51-year-old Kalamazoo resident, and is currently in stable condition at Bronson Hospital.

The case is being forwarded to prosecutors for review.
