KENTWOOD, Mich. — The Kentwood Public Schools Superintendent Scott Palczewski sent a letter to district parents Tuesday informing them of an assault against a female student by a male student.

Jaylen Young, 17, was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of third degree criminal sexual conduct.

In the letter, Palczewski said the assault took place before spring break, but a track coach was informed by the girl’s grandmother on April 1.

Young, a member of the track team, is accused of assaulting the girl in a secluded place on the East Kentwood Freshman Campus after practice. Both students are upperclass members, but authorities did not identify the girl, give her age, nor what grades both students are in.

The girl told her grandmother, who informed the coach that she had filed a complaint with police. The district cooperated with the Kent County Sheriff’s Department, said the superintendent’s letter.

School staff was informed Tuesday this week, and district personnel have met with the girl, her family, and the coach, Palczewski said.
