DORR, Mich. – A father has died in a residential fire that happened early Friday morning, while his wife and teenage son made it out safely.
Dorr Fire Chief Harold Schumaker said the dad, Paul Smit, 41, was helping get family members awake and out of the home when he fell through a fire-weakened floor. Smit’s wife and teenage son got out; three other siblings were not at home at the time.
Three departments responded to the fire at 2149 137th Avenue in Allegan County.
It started shortly before 2:00 a.m. at a residence on 137th Avenue east of 22nd Street.
Michigan State Police fire investigator Scott LeRoy said the likely cause was careless smoking.
