GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Melanie Jasina, 56, will spend 150 days in the Kent County Jail after investigators say she snapped the necks of three kitchens last March.
It happened on March 3 after an argument at a home on the 1700 block of Center Avenue NE in Grand Rapids. Police say the cats were all less than 12 weeks old and belonged to a 16-year-old relative of Jasina’s.
Melanie told authorities that she didn’t remember the incident because she had been drinking all day.
Jasina had a criminal record before this latest run-in. In 1999, she was charged with possessing and discharging a firearm in St. Clair County.
In a psychiatric exam after this latest arrest, she told investigators that she’s been drinking since she was 12.
If Jasina gets substance abuse counseling during her time in jail, she could be let out early. She’ll also serve two years’ probation.
