WALKERVILLE, Mich. – An excavation team was able to recover helicopter wreckage from a wooded area over the weekend.

Thomas Slocum of Hart was killed in the December crash northeast of Shelby.  His passenger was injured, but managed to call for help.

Lt. Craig Mast of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office said that White Lake Excavating and Eagle Towing managed to remove the wreckage.  They were contracted through the victim’s family.

After several attempts, a mini-excavator pulled a large, impromptu sled made of dumpsters bolted together, and made its way to the crash site.  Crews were then able to pull the chopper out of the mud and place it on a flat bed.
