GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., — Winnie Brinks, the newly elected member of the Michigan State House, took her oath of office Saturday.
Brinks was sworn in before a Kent County Circuit Court judge in the auditorium of the Grand Rapids Public Schools Administration Building.
Family and friends joined her as she took the oath to serve the Michigan’s 76th District, which covers a large part of the west side of Grand Rapids. Brinks, a mother of three, said she is not a typical politician and that she is ready to work.
Brinks entered the election as a write-in candidate after Roy Schmidt, the incumbent, abruptly switched parties and put a fake Democrat on the ballot.
Brinks will officially take office on Jan. 1.
