BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – A man in his late 20’s is shot in the head by a clerk after police say he tried robbing a convenience store in Battle Creek.
It happened at the corner of Wabash of Capital Ave in Battle Creek on Monday around 2:45 p.m.
Police say a man in his 20s walked into the Liberty Mart armed with a knife and demanded money, that’s when the clerk grabbed a gun and shot him.
The would be robber was taken to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo in critical condition.
Wendy Taylor was working across the street at OT’s BBQ when police arrived at the scene.
“I was about to cut some corn bread and I saw a cop pull up. Then I saw about 15 more cop cars pull up and they started roping it off and then the ambulance came,” said Taylor.
Police say she was watching the aftermath of an attempted robbery.
Sgt. Jim Martens with the Battle Creek Police Department said, “The suspect came in and produced a weapon, and demanded money at which point the clerk grabbed a weapon and shot the suspect.”
No one else was hurt in the shooting.
A team from the police crime lab spent hours inside the store processing the scene for evidence.
Police say the clerk who pulled the trigger has not been charged with any crime and the case remains under investigation.
Taylor said following the police cars arriving at the scene she witnessed a minor traffic accident as cars stopped on the street to see what was happening at the store.
