GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Calling all Michigan outdoor lovers! There are two full days this weekend to grab a fishing rod, ride the off-road trails and visit the state parks for free June 10th and 11th for "Three Free" weekend.
While all fishing regulations will still apply, all fishing license fees will be waived for June 10th and 11th. This applies to both inland and the Great Lakes and for all species of fish. A Recreation Passport will also not be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites.
Also as part of "Three Free" weekend, you can legally ride 4,000 miles of state-designated routes and trails and the state's six scramble areas without purchasing an ORV license or trail permit. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is also waiving the regular recreation passport fee that grants cars access to all of Michigan's 103 state parks, 1,000-plus state-managed boating access sites and other outdoor spaces.
"If you've never been to one of these places, this is the time to do it," Michigan DNR Chief of Parks and Recreation Ron Olson said.
Olson says while everyone should have some fun, with these hot and dry temps and the recent wildfires, everyone should also be safe.
"There's been already fires in the state of Michigan," Olson said. "We want people to be extra careful. I would say if you don't need to have a fire for some good reason, to not bother. Maybe skip that until things get better or minimize what you're doing so that we don't end up with an inadvertent thing."
